30일, 30개의 생각 6. 인터페이스 연대기-분산의 다이어그램 | 2009/03/07 07:36

<링크>를 읽으면서 네트웍 이론에 대해 어렴풋이나마 이해하게 되었는데 <인터페이스 연대기>를 읽으며 다시 한번 내 생각을 정리할 수 있게 되었다. 시작은 모더니스트 건축가인 르 코르뷔지에의 도시계획이다. 산업혁명 이후로 혼돈의 도시 속에 살아온 이들에게 모더니즘 도시계획은 어찌보면 죽기 전 이루어야 할 마지막 소망이 아니었을까 싶다. 주거의 안전과 교통의 흐름이 완벽히 통제되고, 고층의 직각 건물이 도로를 따라 입체적으로 배치되는, 아마도 그 시대엔 꿈과도 같은 그림이었을 것이다. 하지만 냉전의 분위기가 팽배하고 핵전쟁 시나리오를 대비해야 하는 상황에 놓이게 되면서, 그를 대비하기 위한 '초실용적' 대책이 바로 탈중심화decentralized 네트워크에 입각한 도시계획이었다.

중심화된 모더니즘 도시는 핵공격에 너무나도 취약한 부분이 있었다. 중앙부가 파괴되면 완벽하게 무너지는 도시보다는, 인간의 뇌가 뉴런의 시냅스로 연결되는 듯한 다층적 연결 구조를 가져야 된다는 것이다. 인류의 전멸을 막기 위해 탈중심화의 시나리오를 생각해야만 했던 그들의 마음이 어찌보면 씁쓸하기도 하다.

이런 인류의 전멸을 막기 위해 생각한 탈중심 네트워크는 정말 또 아이러니하게도 베트남전의 베트콩이 게릴라 작전을 위해 땅굴을 파면서 다시 드러난다. 베트콩 게릴라전의 핵심이 되는 이 땅굴은 중앙집중적 감시망을 완전히 비껴나가는 탈중심적 네트워크를 구성하고 있었다. 이러한 분산 네트워크는 디자인 이론가인 크리스토퍼 알렉산더의 '세미라티스'에서 잘 드러난다. 사실 크리스토퍼 알렉산더는 디자인 방법론을 알고리즘화하여 적용할 수 있다고 믿어온 사람이었으나 실제 프로젝트에서 그 한계를 맛보게 된다. 이 프로젝트를 통해 르 코르뷔지에의 부아쟁 계획 등 나무 구조의 집중화된 구조는 일부 소수에게만 이익을 가져다 주는 구조라고 비판하면서, 도시가 인간적으로 돌아가기 위해 풍요로운 패턴의 가능성을 탐구하는 세미라티스 구조를 이야기 하였다.

중심화된 것은 아래가 죽어가고 오직 위 만이 살아가는, 인간미가 느껴질 수 없는 네트워크라고 생각한다. 최하위 노드에서 최상위 노드로 가기위한 방법은 거의 없다시피 한 구조에서 바람직한 변화는 애당초 불가능한 것이었을지도 모른다. 또한 크리스토퍼 알렉산더가 경험한 디자인 방법론의 알고리즘화도 느끼는 점이 많았다. 디자인에서 지나친 개념화는 독이 되는 것 같다. 큰 원칙 속에서 다양한 커뮤니케이션의 가능성을 열어두는 것이 좋을 것이다.

마지막으로 많은 아이러니의 감정을 느꼈다. 냉전시대를 통해 개념화된 분산 네트워크가 다시 전쟁에 이용되기도하고, 이것이 다시 인간에게 풍요로움과 생기를 가져다주는 것이라고 생각하니 여러가지 생각이 든다. 사람이 어떻게 생각하고 사용하느냐에 따라 기술은 큰 변화를 낳을 것이다.
