30일, 30개의 생각 3. 기부하는 디자이너, 프로그래머 | 2009/02/15 17:51

계속적으로 사회에 개입하는 디자이너에 대해 생각한다. 그만큼 나의 관심사는 적극적인 디자이너의 역할인 것 같다.

디자이너는 기본적으로 클라이언트와의 갑을관계로 생계를 유지하는 직업이다. 하지만 여기에서 탈피하려면 자신의 메세지도 표현할 줄 알아야 한다. 디자이너는 남의 시각적 메세지를 만드는 사람이지만 그 방법론을 자신에게도 적용할 수 있으면 좋겠다. 그래야 사회에도 그 방법을 써먹고 할 수 있을 것 같다.

이 차원에서 마이크로 프로젝트와 그에 관한 김창준님과 펭도의 경험을 이야기해보고자 한다. 펭도는 새 사업을 준비하기 위해 사업 아이템을 생각했는데, 그 당시 그에게는 아무런 돈이 없었다. 돈이 없지만 유능한 RoR(Ruby on Rails) 개발자를 많이 알고 있던 펭도는 개발을, 노동력을 투자하는 방식으로 사이트의 개발을 의뢰했다.

김창준님 등 여러 분들은 흔쾌히 노동력을 투자해 주었다. 자본이 없어 창업이 어려운 경영자에게 창의성과 기술을 기부한 셈이다. 이러한 형태의 기부방식은 디자이너들에게도 잘 적용될 수 있을 것 같다. 실제로 국내의한 디자인 대학은 학생 프로젝트로 시민단체의 CI나 홈페이지를 작업해주는 프로젝트를 진행한 바 있다. 이른바 성장을 위한 씨앗을 기부하는 셈이다. 사회를 바꾸기위한 단체나 조직을 형성하기 위해 아이덴티티는 필수적인 요소이다. 이런 필수적인 기술과 디자인을 기부함으로서 사회를 건강하게 바꾸는 데 일조할 수 있다. 이런 방법을 이용한다면 디자이너가 적극적인 포지션으로 사회를 바꾸는 하나의 큰 방법이 될 수 있을 것이다. 자신의 생각을 실현시켜 줄 수 있는 단체에게 돈으로 기부하는 방법도 있겠지만, 어플리케이션이나 디자인을 기부할 수도 있다.
